30th Annual Southern Nevada Mineral Education Workshop Recap
Over 130 teachers gathered at Las Vegas’s Faith Lutheran High School April 16-17 for the 30th annual Southern Nevada Mineral Education Workshop. Over the course of two days, K-12 teachers learned about Nevada’s mining industry and geography, attended field trips, and were given materials and lesson plans to take back to their classrooms.
Day one consisted of a wide range of in-classroom lessons, taught by leading mining and geology professionals. Each class was broken down by grade level and designed to meet state educational standards. Classes included learning about the different types of rocks and minerals found in Nevada, a historical overview of the mining industry, and a number of interactive activities.
On the second day, teachers went on field trips to Las Vegas area mine operations, parts of the mining supply chain, and to local museums and interest points. The trips were designed to give attendees a look at what modern mining looks like, while also showcasing that mining is represented in every part of the state, including Las Vegas.
The southern workshop is one of two the NvMA co-hosts with the Nevada Division of Minerals annually, with the other being held this summer in Reno. There is no cost for educators to attend the workshop and participants are eligible to receive a continuing education credit.
