Summer is just around the corner!
Nevadan’s will be hitting the road to visit their favorite vacation destinations and exploring all that the Silver State has to offer.
Here are 5 places we recommend checking out:
The Tonopah Historic Mining Park celebrates one of the largest mining booms in Nevada history, which brought thousands of people to Tonopah and produced the modern equivalency of $1.2 billion worth of ore. The park contains four of the area’s original mines, portions of which have been restored to give visitors a sense of how sophisticated the industry was, even a century ago.
The museum is open seven days a week and the price of admission is only $5 for adults.
While modern mining is better left to the professionals, there are still a few places like the Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine, where you can find your very own native Nevada gems and minerals. Before planning your trip, contact the mine you plan on visiting, as some require reservations.
Nevada is dotted with hundreds of ghost towns across the state, harkening back to the boom and bust mining cycles of the 19th century. While many of these communities have been lost to time, buildings and artifacts still remain and are available to explore. Just be sure to check that they aren’t located on private property, and of course, leave the area as you found it.
Want to see first-hand what a modern mining operation looks like? Newmont offers public tours of their Nevada operations each Thursday during the summer months. These tours provide the public with a rare opportunity to see the communication, innovation, and technology that is involved in 21st century mining. Contact Newmont’s community relations team to learn more.
There’s no better way to escape a hot, Nevada summer day than a trip to one of the most beautiful places in the world, Lake Tahoe. Not only is the Lake a great place to cool off, but it is home to all sorts of recreational opportunities, including hiking, fishing, and camping.
Lake Tahoe also serves as the perfect backdrop for the Nevada Mining Association’s annual convention, taking place this year September 5-8. Interested in attending? Contact the Nevada Mining Association’s office at (775) 829-2121 for more information.
