Welcome to Basque Madness

Basque culture has been deeply ingrained in Nevada since the mid-19th century. Thousands of people from the small region located between Spain and France immigrated to the United States, many finding work as miners and sheep ranchers. When ranchers and their families made the long journey to the nearest community, they’d often stay at a Basque family-owned hotel. In addition to providing a warm bed, these hotels served meals in a large, family style setting.

That tradition carries on today. Nearly every community in northern Nevada is home to at least one Basque-style restaurant. Ask any Nevadan and they’ll be sure to tell you their favorite place to grab a picon punch. Or two. But never more than two.

The question that has gone unsolved for generations is which is the best Basque restaurant in the Silver State?

We want to settle it once and for all.

Millions of people are filling out brackets this month, and over the next three weeks the Nevada Mining Association will be hosting a tournament of its own to find out who the top dog in Nevada’s Basque country is.

Eight restaurants have been selected. Vote for your favorites now through Sunday, March 18, 2018. The winner of each match up will advance to the final four, which will be held March 20-25, 2018. The top two will advance to the championship round, held March 27 through April 1, 2018. The winner will be announced on Monday, April 2, 2018.
