After working as an equipment operator for many years, Greg Davis has seen all there is to see in mining. His decision to change departments came as a result of wanting to offer more to the miners who work hard to practice safety. The move to Safety Manager at Ames Construction turned out to be the right one for Davis.
“I wanted to make a difference in how people are trained and perform their work,” Davis said. “With my operating knowledge, leadership experience and safety training, I can help others recognize how a job can be done in a safe way.”
A Safety Manager’s role is to make sure that all mining operations are carried out with the correct protocol and attention to detail. Thankfully, Davis has noticed the recent push for enhanced safety measures in the mining industry in recent years, saying, “I see a great change in the mining industry with a new attitude on safety.”
Davis has worked for Ames Construction for about 15 years, first working at Kennecott Copper in Salt Lake City, Utah and recently moving to Elko, Nevada.
Davis appreciates the opportunities he is given to be out in the field and help the miners recognize hazards in their work environment so they can pass that knowledge on to the younger and upcoming miner’s. After so many years in the industry, Davis is extremely grateful to work in a field where compassion is nurtured.
“As a miner you work with people for 12 hours a day,” he said. “You really grow to care about the people you work with and want them to go home safe and injury free every day. That attitude follows you home to your family and friends.”
Being from Utah, Davis enjoys many winter sports in his free time. With his family and kids, he likes to go snowmobiling and skiing in the winter time and golfing and fishing in the summer.
