Miners Celebrate Mining Day at the Nevada Legislature
Miners from all over braved the rain to gather in Carson City on February 13 for the Nevada Mining Association’s Mining Day at the Legislature. The day gave participants an opportunity to learn about the Nevada legislative process, meet face-to-face with lawmakers, and display the unity of the Nevada mining industry.
Lunch and Legislative Update
Mining Day kicked off with a luncheon, where Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske welcomed attendees to the capitol and gave an overview of the Secretary of State’s office and responsibilities. NvMA President Dana Bennett then provided an update on the 80th Session of the Nevada Legislature and the bills the NvMA will be tracking.
Tour of the Legislative Building
Following lunch, participants toured the legislative building. The tour gave attendees an up-close look at how bills become law. They visited committee rooms, where bills and amendments are discussed, then toured the chambers of the Assembly and the Senate, where final versions of bills are voted on.
Q&A Session
Attendees then had the opportunity to meet face-to-face with Nevada lawmakers. Assemblyman Jim Wheeler, Assemblyman Glen Leavitt, Assemblyman Tom Roberts, Assemblyman Jon Ellison, Assemblywoman Heidi Swank, and Senator Melanie Scheible all addressed Mining Day attendees and took questions from participants.
Reception
The day concluded with a reception at Carson City’s Union Taphouse. Miners networked, discussed the fun and educational day in Carson City, and celebrated Nevada mining!
