Education is a top priority for the mining industry.  We rely on highly-skilled, well-educated employees and understand the value that quality education brings to our communities and state.  One unheralded example is the ‘Mining Industry Foundation’ created almost 20 years ago by a handful of mining companies in Humboldt County to support Lowry High School in Winnemucca, Nev.

Created in 1992, this endowment awards scholarships to top performing students.  For the past 18 years, the foundation has awarded scholarships and savings bonds to students with exemplary grades and attendance records.

In 2004, a similar foundation was established for Battle Mountain High School (54 miles southeast of Winnemucca). The Battle Mountain High School Mining Foundation is funded by Newmont Mining Corporation and Goldcorp Marigold and provides savings bonds to deserving students. Awards include perfect attendance, exemplary performance based on GPA and class achievement.  

Award guidelines for both foundations are based on several key fundamentals. They recognize and respect that future leaders are needed, not only for the mining industry, but for all occupations and those leaders need a quality education during and beyond high school.   Qualifications include having a good work ethic, performing well in class, being dependable, having a positive attitude and being active in their community.
