with nearly 100 teachers from all over Nevada participating at Reno’s Wooster High School. Learn more about this Nevada Mining Association activity in our event primer.
What is the teacher workshop?
The Northern Nevada Teacher’s Mineral Workshop offers educators two fun-filled days of learning and experiencing Nevada’s geology and mining industry. The Nevada Mining Association and the Nevada Division of Minerals co-host the event, with several mine operators and government agencies participating as well.
Who attends?
Any K-12 teacher is welcome to attend the workshop at no cost! All lessons meet Nevada’s education STEM standards. Educators are given supplies to take back to their classrooms and can receive a continuing education credit through their attendance.
Who presents at the workshop?
The workshop brings in some of the most knowledgeable men and women in Nevada geology and mining. Presenters have extensive backgrounds in their subjects and provide grade-specific lessons and activities teachers can use with their students.
What about field trips?
Teachers spend both afternoons of the workshop visiting area mines, companies representing the industry supply chain, and local museums. These trips give educators a first-hand glimpse at what modern mining looks like and how the industry benefits Nevada.
When are Workshops held?
There are two workshops every year, one in southern Nevada during the Clark County School District’s spring break, and the other in the northern part of the state in July. If you are an educator interested in attending, or know an educator who may be, contact the Nevada Mining Association office at (775) 829-2121 for more information.
