Before you fire up the heat on a cold evening, make sure your furnace is working properly and that the area is clear of potentially flammable objects. Furnace flames should be blue. Orange or yellow flames are a sign that something is not working properly.

Clean Gutters with Safety in Mind

Watching leaves change colors is a fall tradition, but they can be a pain for homeowners. Leaves can clog gutters, trapping rain and potentially causing roof damage. But be careful when cleaning them out, ladder mishaps are one of the most common fall time household injuries.

Drive with Caution

Rain and snow can cause a rapid decrease in road quality and visibility. Drive slower in bad weather and pack an emergency weather kit that includes water and warm clothing in the event you become stranded.

It Gets Darker Earlier

Kids are back in school, and with the days becoming shorter and shorter, there’s a higher chance of encountering young ones in the dark. Travel with extra caution at night and be sure to have your car lights on.

Change Batteries

While house fires have decreased over the last 30 years, deaths have slightly increased. The reason? Homes without a properly functioning smoke detector. Change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every daylight savings time and keep your family safe in the event of a fire.
