Safety Share: Road Trips
Summer is just around the corner, meaning Americans will be hitting the road by the millions. Here are some safety tips to help you make sure you reach your destination safely.
Make sure your car is in tip top shape
Before you hit the road, get your car serviced by a trusted mechanic. Blown tires increase in the summer months, the result of warmer roads and fluctuating tire pressure. Monitor your vehicle’s tires and fluid levels during long trips and pack an emergency travel kit.
Watch for others
Vehicles won’t be the only things on the road during the summer. When you’re driving, be mindful to share the road with bicyclists and motorcycles. Additionally, be extra attentive in neighborhoods and near parks where children are more likely to be during the day.
Don’t forget the weather can change
The sun shines brightly in Nevada throughout the summer. However, rain storms can be sudden and violent, drastically changing road conditions. When driving in the rain, slow down to avoid hydroplaning, turn on your headlights, and give vehicles in front of you additional space.
Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water isn’t just important when spending time outside. Studies have shown dehydrated drivers can be as much of a threat on the road as drunk drivers. Ensure you travel with water, especially on long trips where air conditioners contribute to dehydration.
Don’t drink and drive
While there are plenty of fun activities to do during the summer, drinking and driving is never acceptable. If you plan on drinking alcohol, either designate a driver, or use a taxi or ride sharing service.
