Voice of Nevada’s Mining Industry endorses Ballot Question 1
Today, the Nevada Mining Association (NVMA) announced its support for Ballot Question 1, which will benefit our state’s higher education system by bringing accountability, transparency, and oversight to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and Board of Regents, which oversees the state’s university, colleges, and community colleges.
Established in 1913, the NVMA conducts education and lobbying on behalf of mining companies throughout the state. Mining employs 11,000 individuals statewide and plays an important role in the state’s economy, especially in mining communities and counties.
NVMA President Tyre Gray said about the endorsement:
“Nevada’s mining industry relies heavily on workforce training and other programs provided by our community colleges, which have been targeted recently for budget reductions and even possible elimination. Because of this, we are endorsing Ballot Question 1, which will bring accountability, transparency and oversight to NSHE and the Board of Regents. With a system in place for checks and balances, we can ensure that taxpayer dollars benefit these crucial programs and continue to support rural Nevada and industry such as ours.”
About Ballot Question 1
Ballot Question 1 will provide accountability, oversight, and transparency to Nevada’s system of Higher Education (NSHE) and the Board of Regents by removing them from the State Constitution. The question is formerly known as AJR5 and was passed with bipartisan support by the State Legislature twice (2017 and 2019). If Question 1 passes in the upcoming election, all of the powers, duties, and elections of the Board of Regents are preserved in NRS 396.020 and 396.040. There is no fiscal note attached to the ballot question. To learn more about the campaign, please visit: www.Yeson1forHigherEducation.com.
