What Modern Mining Looks Like in Nevada

How Nevada continues to lead through responsible, modern mining.

Just as it was in the days of the Comstock Lode, mining continues to be a critical part of Nevada’s economy and culture today. For more than a century and a half, the industry has evolved to meet new demands and challenges, helping establish Nevada as one of the world’s premier mining jurisdictions.

Today, Nevada is home to more than 100 mining operations, producing over 20 minerals that support infrastructure, manufacturing, national security, and advanced technologies. The state is the leading producer of gold in the United States, accounting for roughly 70% of annual production. Nevada is also a major producer of silver, copper, diatomaceous earth, and gypsum. It is home to the only operating lithium mine in North America, with several major projects moving forward that are expected to further expand the state’s role in global mineral production.

That reputation is acknowledged by mining leaders around the world. In its 2025 survey. The Fraser Institute ranked Nevada as the top mining jurisdiction globally. The survey considers more than mineral potential. It also evaluates the state’s regulatory framework, political stability, and infrastructure. Those factors are not abstract. They show up in how mining operates across Nevada.

Modern mining in Nevada is defined by planning, accountability, and high standards. Before a shovel breaks ground, operations go through a rigorous permitting process. Companies must submit detailed reclamation plans and post financial assurances to ensure restoration can be completed, even in the event of an unexpected shutdown. Today, the state of Nevada holds approximately $4.5 billion in reclamation bonding.

During operation, mines adhere to a strict set of state and federal requirements. Teams of professionals monitor land, water, and air quality, as well as local wildlife. This work is ongoing and informs day-to-day decisions across a site.

That same level of discipline carries over into workplace safety. Mining is one of Nevada’s safest industries, supported by a strong, built-in safety culture. From safety shares at the start of meetings to pre- and post-shift inspections and ongoing hazard mitigation, the focus is consistent: every worker goes home safe at the end of the day. Technology continues to support that goal, with advancements such as automated haul trucks and drilling tools that help further reduce risk.

The industry’s impact extends well beyond the mine site. Mining supports 30,000 careers across all 17 Nevada counties. Those careers pay an average salary of $120,200, making it one of the state’s highest paying industries and roughly 80% higher than the state median income. In addition to paying all standard state and local taxes, mining also contributes through two industry-specific taxes. In the 2023 to 2024 biennium, the industry generated $930 million in revenue for the state. Overall, mining contributed $16.2 billion in economic activity in 2024, supporting local economies and businesses that communities rely on.

Looking ahead, Nevada mining is well positioned to remain a global leader. As the United States works to strengthen domestic supply chains, the state is expected to play a central role. Nevada is home to deposits of several strategic minerals that are currently sourced from abroad, and to the continued development of resources such as gold. Together, these position the state to meet growing demand while maintaining the strong standards that define mining in Nevada.
